Slender Steel & Infinity Glass Extension, Cotswolds

Harmonising Heritage and Horizon

Located in the Cotswolds, this project represents a sophisticated structural "back-knock" and extension designed to bring the outside in. By replacing a traditional rear elevation with a slender timber, glass, and steel structure, we realised a vision that prioritises light, reflection, and a profound connection to the south-facing gardens.

The Brief: A Seamless Connection

The initial brief provided by Matthew Clay Architects was to create a contemporary space that dissolved the boundaries between the home and the landscape. This was achieved through high-specification engineering and meticulous craftsmanship.

  • Infinity Glazing: Frameless ‘infinity’ glass panels were installed at the corners to blend reflection and light, ensuring the view remains unimpeded even in the winter months.
  • Slender Engineering: The use of a minimalist steel and timber framework allowed for over 8m of clear opening via floor-to-ceiling sliding doors.
  • Thermal Innovation: Despite the expansive double glazing, the extension remains thermally efficient thanks to airtight construction and an extensive sedum green roof.

The Sage Quality Constant: Built on Trust

This project was uniquely rooted in professional trust. Sage Developments was selected by a long-term architectural partner to execute this substantial transformation for a family member. Despite the site being 70 miles from our base, the Sage Quality Constant ensured a smooth journey through:

  • Remote Management: Executing complex structural works and extensive patio landscaping with total autonomy and professional foresight.
  • Complex Groundworks: Managing the demolition of the original rear structure and the grading for a wide-span flat roof and modern kitchen installation.
  • Internal Precision: Creating four distinct zones – kitchen, dining, garden room, and music space – within a single, unified open-plan footprint.

The Result

A decade after completion, the Bagley Wood Road extension remains a landmark of contemporary residential design. It proves that when the project triangle of Client, Architect, and Contractor is built on a foundation of trust, the result is a legacy that remains unimpeachable.

"We were blown away by how this dream was realised through the quality of design and craftsmanship alike."
