Low-Energy Modern New Build, Batheaston, Bath

Stonehurst: A Masterclass in Free-Flowing Modernism
Stonehurst emerged following the demolition of a 1950s bungalow on Fosse Lane, Batheaston, replaced by a sophisticated 5-bedroom, single-storey structure. Designed with free-flowing spaces rather than traditional rooms, and subtle divisions rather than walls, the home creates a seamless architectural narrative that respects its rural Bath setting.
Architectural Synergy & Landscape
Great care was taken to limit the impact of the house on the surrounding landscape. We selected materials specifically to blend the structure into the horizon; the specialist hardwood cladding was chosen for its ability to quickly silver, perfectly complementing the local limestone masonry.
- South-Facing Vista: An abundance of high-performance glass sequences the views over the private gardens and the valley beyond.
- Sustainability at the Core: This is a low-energy home featuring triple glazing, a heat exchanger, and rigorous airtight building construction to ensure long-term efficiency.
- Technical Engineering: Managed a complex demolition and a bespoke split-level civils package to facilitate the "free-flowing" internal layout.
The Smooth Journey: Global Collaboration
With the client and lead architect based overseas, our open dialogue was critical to the exceptional beauty of the finished result. At Sage, we ensured the client understood exactly how the budget was being utilised at every step, maintaining total transparency throughout the 12-month programme.
